Pirate ship birthday card

This pirate ship birthday card is just the thing to make for someone special. In fact it's so cute you might not want to give it away.

Time: 45 minutes
Age: Over 10s
Level: Hard

Materials
I have used quite unusual materials that gave interesting textures. However you could easily just use coloured paper or any coloured material/ felt instead.

Blank card
Brown leather scrap for the pirate ship hull
3 metal nuts or washers for the port holes
3 scraps of different shades of blue ripstop fabric for the waves
Scraps of red, white and black ripstop fabric for the sails
3 wooden BBQ skewers
PVA glue and strong glue

You could just use coloured paper instead of some of the more unusual materials

Method
Cut out a pirate ship hull shape from the brown leather to fit onto your card

Cut out a set of curling waves from the dark blue fabric.
Cut a smaller depth of wiggly wave from the medium blue coloured fabric
Cut an even smaller depth of wiggly wave from the light blue coloured fabric

Glue the hull on first then glue the dark blue wave on to just overlap the hull. Now glue the mid blue wave then lastly the light blue wave on top.

Don't worry about the length of the waves - you can trim once they are stuck down

Cut three masts from the wooden skewers and glue onto the card. Cut two smaller pieces of skewer for the cross pieces on each mast and glue on to the card.

Cut sail shapes and glue on to each cross piece. I made one white sail, one red and then glued white strips onto a red sail to make a striped one

Sticking on the sails

Cut a white skull and cross bones and glue on to a black sail to make a jolly roger.

Sails made from ripstop fabric

Glue on three metal nuts or washers to the hull with strong glue to make port holes.

We found some metal nuts with a nautical looking pattern on them in our tool box which were perfect for port holes

Your pirate ship card is now ready to send!

If you liked making this, you could go wild and make a huge pirate ship for your bedroom wall. This card is a mini version of my son's pirate-themed bedroom. I will post a tutorial of how to make this in a separate article.

You could even make a giant sized version for your bedroom wall

Notes
I bought low cost ripstop remnants from Fabrics n Stuff They are based in UK but ship worldwide at reasonable postage rates.
I bought leather offcuts from a local discount fabric store.
