Put your felt underwater creatures inside and then it's time to go fishing
You can buy magnetic fishing toys for children but it's much more fun to make your own. There are two stages to this project, creating the fishing pond and then your fish.
: 1 hour
: Under 5s and 5 to 10s
My toddler wanted to be as involved as possible in making his new toy so we started with the fish pond.
The process is as much fun as the assembly
Younger children will enjoy sticking the seaweed onto their paintings
A fun sandy bottom but you could just leave it plain if you wanted
Next you need to create some fish or other underwater creatures to catch. My son wanted red fish, a starfish and a jelly fish. I tried a few different techniques and he guided me in the colours he wanted. Older children will be able to make these themselves.
The starfish were the most simple, just two pieces of felt glued with the washer in between and two googly eyes
The metal washer needs to poke out of the fish so that it can be picked up easily by the magnet on the fishing rod
Leave a little gap to stuff with wading and then glue or sew closed
Lots of underwater felt creatures to fish for
Finally, you will need a rod to go fishing.
Just glue a magnet to the end of the string
This is a great game to encourage concentration, dexterity and patience. You can also adapt it with various challenges. We have been practicing counting and colours at the same time.
