From an old black tray, we created an interesting activity for my two preschoolers to match colours, count and work on fine motor skills. Using supplies from around the house, this activity would be great as a "busy bag" activity for those moments when you need just a few minutes of uninterrupted time.

Coloured paper
Black pen
Tape or glue
Various coloured small toys and items (pompoms, small animals, novelty items, decorative items for fish tanks)
Small pair of tongs

Find a sorting tray. A muffin tin, craft tray or even a small tool box would work.

Sorting Tray

Measure the bottom of the tray boxes and cut different colours of paper to line the bottom. If you are using numbers, write the numbers on before taping or gluing onto the bottom of each section.

We kept a couple of sections open in the tray to hold stray items.

Collect coloured items for your tray. They should match the colours of paper in the bottom of your tray as closely as possible.

You are now ready for sorting. Use the tongs or your hands to move the correct number of items into each of the colours. Have fun!
