Cheerio stacking towers

Developing fine motor skills in pre school children is an essential foundation for many other skills from handwriting to numeracy. Fine motor refers to the small muscles in hands and fingers and this game is a fun to way improve hand-eye co-ordination at the same time.

Time: 10 - 15 minutes
Age: Under 5's
Level: Easy to set up and medium difficulty as a game.

Materials
Play Dough (shop bought or make your own glitter play dough)
Uncooked spaghetti
Cheerios

Method
Start with some play dough and squish it around and then roll it into balls. Manipulating the play dough is a good fine motor skill activity in itself.

Rolling, cutting, shaping and squishing play dough is great for developing fine motor skills

Push a piece of spaghetti into each play dough ball.
We decided to experiment with the spaghetti at different lengths in each play dough ball.

Put some Cheerios in a pot and encourage your child to thread them over the spaghetti.

Some Cheerios might get eaten before they get threaded over the spaghetti

If you have different colours of play dough you can talk about colours at the same time and you can count how many Cheerios there are in each tower.

This is a very simple and non messy activity to set up and I was surprised by just how much fun my toddler had doing it. 'Look Mummy, I'm doing it' was repeated many times.
