My daughter loves jigsaw puzzles and wanted to make her own. Whilst the pieces don't clip together as nicely as a shop-bought puzzle, she was pretty thrilled to have one with her own artwork.

Time: 30 minutes plus drying time
Age: Any age
Level: Hard

Materials
Sheet of paper
Piece of card (we used an old cereal box)
Paint
Glue
Pen
Scissors
Clear sticky back contact plastic

Method
Paint a picture on a piece of paper. It's important to try to cover as much of the paper as possible with different coloured patterns, so for young children paint is easiest.

Allow the picture to dry then glue onto a piece of cardboard. As the pieces will be cut up, it's important to cover the whole of the paper with glue to avoid the puzzle pieces peeling apart after they have been cut up.

Ready to trim

On the back of the puzzle, draw a grid of rectangles. For an A4 sized sheet of paper, our grid was 4x3 (12 rectangles total).

Your jigsaw is now ready to play with.

Before you add the sticky plastic, you could also try writing a number on each piece on the back of the jigsaw and play a counting game (i.e. the 1 goes next to the 2 which goes next to the 3 etc).

If you want a professional finish, try scanning the artwork (or taking a photo of it) and getting it printed into a jigsaw photo gift at a photo shop.
