Ready for Trick or Treaters

Halloween lanterns are traditionally carved out of pumpkins in North America or turnips in Ireland. In Australia, try carving a watermelon instead. They are often cheaper than Halloween pumpkins and the flesh is much easier for young kids to scoop out. Enjoy eating the scooped-out watermelon as you make the lantern or whizz into a juice.

Time: 20 minutes
Age: Any Age
Level: Easy

Materials
Whole watermelon
Knife
Spoon
Large bowl
Tealight candle

Method
Carefully slice the top off the watermelon (get an adult to do this). Keep both parts.
Scoop the red watermelon flesh out and put it in a separate bowl.
Cut a spooky face out of the side green wall of the lantern.

You can now put a tealight candle into the bottom of your lantern and replace the lid.
