Colourful kites

This colourful picture is a fun way to explore techniques, colours and textures. It's all about the process and having fun with colour rather than the end result. Young children will love dropping food colouring onto the dispersing paper and watching the colours merge, but will need help to cut out and finish the kites.

Time: 30 minutes
Age: Under 5's with help, 5-10's, Over 10s
Level: Medium

Materials
Large piece of paper for the background
Blue paint and brush
Cotton wool balls
One sheet of dispersing paper for the kites
Food colouring
Eye dropper
White glue
Glue stick
Marker pen

Dispersing paper is lots of fun

Method
Apply blue paint onto a sheet of paper to make the sky. If a young child is making the picture (like my 3 year old here), you might want to pick a sheet of blue paper to paint on and it won't matter if the blue paint doesn't cover the whole page neatly.

Painting the sky

Squirt white school glue onto the sky and stick down cotton wool balls which have been teased out a little to make fluffy clouds.

Fluffy clouds

Use an eye dropper to drop food colouring onto the dispersing paper. Enjoy watching the colours bleed into the paper and merge together.

The fun part

Ready to cut out the kites

When the dispersing paper is dry, cut out kite shapes and draw a cross with the marker pen

Kites ready to stick on

Stick the kites on to the picture and draw on kite tails with the marker pen. Use a glue stick to stick the kites on as white glue is too wet and will stain through the dispersing paper.

Notes
I bought Zart dispersing paper from Art Shed in Brisbane. It cost $7.50 for 20 A4 sheets. We used half a sheet for this project.
