My 7 month old son was grumpy until he caught sight of the brightly coloured sensory spaghetti

Sensory play is great for development of children at all ages and something that babies will love. You don't need to spend a fortune on expensive items. Sensory spaghetti is quick to make, safe and lots of fun. Older siblings can get involved too.

The fun began even before I had cooked the spaghetti

Time: 10 minutes to prepare
Age: Under 5's
Level: Easy

Materials
Spaghetti
Food colouring
A touch of oil
Plastic freezer bags
Non breakable bowls or container

Method
Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of boiling water until al dente.
Add a touch of oil to the spaghetti to keep is moist while you do the colouring.
Put some of the spaghetti in a plastic freezer bag and add about 10-15 drops of food colouring.
Give the spaghetti a good mix around. Older children can help at this point.

Add more food colouring if the colour isn't deep enough
Repeat with other colours in different bags.
Put the spaghetti in different bowls or one big container and let your kids get their hands stuck in.

The spaghetti is soft, wriggly and colourful to play with

If older children are involved you can experiment with mixing food colouring to create other colours which makes a fun early science lesson.
