Up, up and away! This is a fun activity to make your own paper batik hot air balloon picture. It's great for younger kids as no hot wax is required to make the batik effect. Hang your finished picture on the wall or stick to a window with a curl of sticky tape to brighten up any room.
Time: 30 minutes
Age: Any Age
Level: Easy
Materials
1 sheet sugar (construction) paper
Leather or twine for ropes
Scrap of material for basket (we used hessian)
Method
Draw a hot air balloon shape on a piece of paper. We used sugar (construction) paper which was slightly rough and absorbent
Colour in with crayon. Try to cover the whole image with thick crayon
Crumple the piece of paper and open out again.

The crumpling makes cracks in the wax
Make up a wash in a pot using a squirt of black paint and a little water. Paint the black wash over the crumpled paper
The crumpling makes cracks in the wax and the black paint fills the cracks giving a batik effect.

The black paint fills the cracks in the wax
Allow to dry then cut out the balloon shape
Cut a square of material to make a basket. We used a scrap of hessian as it had a nice woven effect. You could also colour a piece of paper brown or cut a brown square from a magazine
Cut four pieces of leather strip or twine to make basket ropes. Stick these to the back of the ballon and the top of the basket
Your paper batik hot air balloon is now ready to hang. Why not try making little people to ride in your balloon?
Older children could make a melted wax batik balloon using
shaved crayons and iron technique
