Chinese Lanterns

Posted 2013-07-13 by Oxford Explorerfollow
Simple to make, these paper Chinese lanterns look great. They would be perfect to create around Chinese New Year or just as a colourful decoration for a party.

Paper

Time: 15 minutes
Age: 5-10's, Over 10's
Level: Easy

Materials
  • Colourful A4 paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or sticky tape

  • Method
  • Cut a strip 2cm wide from the width of the paper and set aside to use later for the handle.

  • Fold the remaining rectangle in half along the length.
  • Whilst folded, cut lengths 2cm apart from the folded edge almost all the way along the paper but stop 2cm before the end. You could experiment with different distances apart for different effects.

  • Unfold the paper and bend around to create a tube.

  • Glue or tape the two short sides together.
  • Turn the lantern right side up and push down slightly to widen the middle section.
  • Using the section of paper you set aside, tape or glue each end to the top of the lantern to create a handle.

  • You could go one step further and decorate your paper Chinese lantern. Why not add a some glitter for a little sparkle or use smaller rectangles of paper to create mini Chinese lanterns.
