Sugar Cookie Decorating
Use your imagination to create unique designs for each cookie.

Baking and decorating these simple cookies is a great activity for children of all ages! We made them for Valentines Day, but they are great for any occasion. The recipe makes approximately 20 cookies, so there are plenty of tasty treats for budding artists to decorate!

Time: One hour
Age: Any age
Level: Easy

Materials
For the Cookies:
cookie cutters
mixing bowls, spoons, cookie sheets
2/3 cup softened butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
4 teaspoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
For the Icing:
1 cup powdered sugar
1-1/2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
decorating materials for the cookies such as edible sequins, coconut, coloured sprinkles and writing icing

Method
In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the egg, milk and vanilla.
Blend in flour, baking powder and salt until well mixed.
Grease 2 large cookie sheets.
On a lightly floured surface, roll dough 1 cm thick.
Use cookie cutters to cut dough into shapes.
Place cookies on cookie sheets.
Reroll trimmings and continue to cut shapes until no dough remains.
Bake in oven for 8 minutes at 200 degrees C.
Transfer cookies to racks to cool completely.
To make the icing, mix together powdered sugar, milk and vanilla.
Once cookies are cooled completely, spread a layer of icing on each cookie and then use decorating materials to create unique and beautiful cookie creations.
Children will be thrilled to make and eat their own unique cookie creations!
