Create this cute little whale purse to store tiny treasures. The whale's button eye closes the purse shut. It would be a simple first sewing project for over 5's and a fun way to learn to sew on buttons.

Materials
Blue and white thread and needle
Starting materials
Cut a whale shape out of the white felt.
Sew the button on to the whale where you want the eye to be.
Cut a rectangular piece of blue felt. It should be a few centimeters wider than the whale and just over 3 times as tall.
Fold over the felt to make a pouch leaving a third of the original length at the top.
Sew up both sides of the pouch leaving the flap at the top.

Fold the flap over the pouch and iron to get a good crease.
Glue the whale onto the front of the pouch, under the flap, with PVA glue. You might need to glue the whale on, squash flat under something heavy, allow the glue to dry, then peel off and glue on again. This double gluing process gives a good surface on the two pieces of felt to enable them to bond together properly. Leave to set for several hours.
Cut the top of the flap into a wave shape.
Fold the flap over a cut a button hole in the flap over where the whale button eye is.

The purse can now be buttoned closed.
