Jeans Bag

Create a fun bag out of a pair of old trousers or shorts. It makes an ideal first sewing project for kids - either with a needle and thread or as an easy introduction to the sewing machine.

Time: 30 minutes
Age: 5 to 10s, Over 10s
Level: Medium

Materials
Pair of old jeans, trousers or shorts in any type of fabric.
Scissors
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Ribbon
Other items to embellish the bag - e.g. Fabric flowers, buttons, sequins etc.

We used some corduroy shorts


Method
Cut the legs off the shorts or trousers to leave a mini skirt.

Turn inside out and sew closed the bottom of the 'skirt' using a needle and thread or sewing machine.

Sew a piece of ribbon (the length you want the bag strap to be) onto both sides of the open edge.

Sew the ribbon strap onto the bag when it is still inside out to give a neat finish when you turn back the right way round


Turn back out the right way.
The bag is now ready to decorate with fabric flowers, buttons etc.

The bag is now ready to use. The pockets are very handy for stashing toys, sweets etc.
