This mermaid birthday card is fun to make and will make any birthday girl or boy smile.
Time: 20 minutes
Age: Under 5's with help, 5-10's
Level: Easy
Materials
Large piece of card
Paint for hair
Skin coloured paper
Shiny paper for mermaid tail
Felt tip pen to draw face
Glitter, beads
PVA glue and glue stick
Starting materials ready to go
Method
We made our mermaid on a piece of paper first and then stuck it onto card at the end but you could make your picture straight onto a piece of card.
Apply paint to a hand
The messy part
Make a couple of handprints on your piece of card, one on top of the other to make wavy hair. Don't spread your fingers out too wide.
We did one orange handprint then mixed some orange and pink paint together for another print on top
Cut out a circle and also a body with arms out of the skin coloured paper. Stick the circle onto the palm area of your handprint to make a face. Attach the body to the head.
You can stick straight on to the wet paint without glue
Add the body with a glue stick
Cut a tail shape out of shiny paper and stick on to the bottom of the body
Stick on a rectangle of shiny material and stick on to the body to make a top for your mermaid to wear
Dab glue on to the tail and shake glitter on top to make shiny scales
Glue beads or sequins on at the waist
We found some shiny beads to stick on
Draw a face on with a felt tip pen. You could also try googly eyes.
Your mermaid card is ready to send. Or maybe you'll decide to frame it instead and hang it on your bedroom wall? Please take a picture of your creation and post in the comments section.
