Not just for Christmas, salt dough is an inexpensive and safe medium for children to make decorations at any time of year! Use your salt dough ornaments to decorate this spooky Halloween tree for a one of a kind Halloween center piece!
Time: 60 minutes (plus drying time for salt dough and paint)
Age: Any Age
Level: Easy
Materials
Salt dough - see Method step 1
Halloween cookie cutters
Baking sheets
Paint
Paint brushes
Black thread
Vase or jar
Branches
Black spray paint
Method
Roll out your dough to about 5-7 mm thickness.
Cut out your ornaments and use a straw to poke a hole in the top. This will give you a spot to put the thread through for hanging.
Let the ornaments dry. I prefer the oven method. Put your oven on as low a temperature as you can and leave in until the ornaments are hard and make a hollow sound when you tap them.
Paint and decorate ornaments. Use glitter, felt or other materials to adourn your ornaments if you wish.
Lay out your branches and spray paint in well ventilated area.
After the ornaments and branches are dry, arrange the branches in a vase or jar. It is a good idea to put some sand or rocks in the bottom of the jar to balance out the weight.
Pull some thread through the holes in the top of the ornaments and hang on your tree.
We chose to decorate our vase with a simple mummy design. Wrap toilet paper around the jar, glue down the ends and glue on some googly eyes. Voila! A mummy jar!
Make your tree even more spooky by adding pulled apart cotton balls or batting to make it look like spider webs!
