Combining drawing, tying and cutting, this craft allows young children to practice their fine motor skills. It is also suitable for older children who will need minimal support from an adult. The result is a fun decoration for your child's bedroom or playroom.

Materials
One thin, long tree twig
Construction Paper
Black sharpie or other thick marker
Thick crafting string or wool
Scissors
Hook for hanging from the ceiling

Method
Go outside and find a long, thin twig or branch from a tree. Ideally, it should be approximately 2 cm thick and about 20 cm long.
Using a thick sharpie or other black marker, draw five designs to hang on the mobile. When using the sharpie, ensure to press hard enough that you will be able to see the markings on the other side of the paper.

Different coloured construction paper creates a colourful decoration.

Turn the paper over and trace over the lines made on the first side. This is essential because as the mobile turns when hanging, you will want both sides to match.
Carefully cut out each of your designs, ensuring that the black marker remains as a border.

By keeping the thick black border, your designs will stand out prominently.

Cut five different lengths of crafting string.
Tie each string to the twig, carefully spacing them evenly.
Find the middle of the branch and tie one more string onto the mobile. This will be the string from which the mobile hangs.

We chose to use different colours of string so that the mobile was more colourful.

Carefully poke a hole into each drawing, ensuring your construction paper doesn't tear. Then, tie the drawing onto the end of the string.

Allowing your child to help tie the designs onto the mobile will provide practice for fine motor skills.

Affix a hook to the end of the hanging string and hang the mobile in your child's bedroom or playroom.

Paper Insect Mobile
Our daughter asked to hang the mobile in her bedroom so she could see it every morning!
