Pom Pom Caterpillar
These cute creepy crawlies are very easy to make. All you really need for a really basic caterpillar are some pom poms and glue. You could also use the same ideas to make any number of insects and bugs, just by changing the number of pom poms and using pipe cleaners or paper to make legs or wings.
This is a really fun craft activity if you've recently read
The Very Hungry Caterpillar . Or make one if you've started noticing a few furry caterpillars appearing in your garden.
Time: 5 minutes
Age: 5-10s
Level: Easy
Materials
Pom poms
Pipe cleaners
Craft glue
Googly eyes
Paper or Card
Green pencil
Method
Start out by drawing your leaf for the caterpillar to sit on. If you have green card you can just cut out a leaf shape, otherwise colour in the paper and cut your leaf out.
Arrange your pom poms on the leaf, so you know how many you want, and in what shape. Use a slightly larger pom pom for the caterpillar's head.
Glue the first pom pom to the paper using a bit of craft glue. Push down on the pom pom to make it stick.
Cut and fold your pipe cleaner so that it forms a V shape that curves at the end. These are the caterpillar's 'feelers'. Glue them in place just behind the caterpillar's head. You may need to hold them for a while in place, but once you start glueing the rest of the caterpillar's body they should stand upright.
One by one glue down the remaining pom poms to form your caterpillar's body.
Now you just need to add some eyes. Googly eyes are lots of fun, but you could also draw some eyes on paper and stick them on using the craft glue.
Let us know if you think of any other bugs you could make with pom poms.
