Popsicle Stick Weaving

Popsicle Stick Weaving

Posted 2013-05-27 by Jane Streetfollow

This is a fun weaving activity which costs next to nothing. It's a great hand/eye coordination activity for younger children. My 3 year old found it frustrating and needed lots of help but was very proud of her final creation.

Time: 30 minutes
Age: Any Age
Level: Medium

Materials
  • Popsicle (lolly) sticks
  • A selection of materials to weave such as wool, pipe cleaners, ribbon, strips of fabric or coloured cellophane
  • Sticky tape (optional)

  • Start materials

    Method
  • Cross two popsicle sticks and secure them with sticky tape, wool or pipe cleaners

  • Cross the popsicle sticks and secure

  • Stick your first piece of material to weave near the crossing point of the popsicle sticks (or tie it on if you prefer)
  • Weave the material by looping it round each popsicle stick in turn. You can stick or tie down the ends when you have finished

  • Weave in and out of the popsicle sticks, looping round any way you want to

  • Keep going with other colours or materials

  • We used unusual materials like pipe cleaners and strips of coloured cellophane as well as wool and string

Why not try using more popsicle sticks in a star shape for a more complicated weave? Or you could use silver wool to make a spider's web or snowflake. Please upload a picture of your creation via the comments section - we'd love to see it!
