Hama bead coaster

Hama beads are tiny little plastic beads that you melt to create all kinds of creations. Once your child reaches three they are less likely to try and swallow them and they're a great way to improve fine motor skills.

As kids get older they can experiment with more complicated designs.

Here's how to make a simple coaster would which would make a great present for grandparents.

Time: 20 minutes
Age: Over 3s
Level: Medium

Materials
Hama beads
Hama bead peg board
Iron
Hama ironing paper

Method
Pour the beads into a container that's easy to access as you don't want them spilling all over the floor.
Place individual beads on each spike on the board.
It's quite fiddly but perfect at encouraging concentration and developing the all important small muscles in your kid's hands which is needed when learning to write.

Once filled, it's time for an adult to do the melting part.

Place the Hama paper over the top of the beads and place a low heat setting iron on top.

The beads will melt and merge together.
Leave to cool for a few minutes and then remove from the peg board.

Even a mish mash of colours from young ones creates a unique look.
