Making and playing with rainbow rice is a fun sensory play activity for Under 5s. Lay out an old sheet outside on a sunny day to catch spilled rice as it gets scooped, poured and funnelled into different containers.
Time: 30 minutes
Age: Under 5's
Uncooked rice (we used long grain and arborio to get different shapes and sizes)
Bowls, spoons, plastic bottles etc to play with
Cheap and easy ingredients
Pour some uncooked rice into various tubs.
Add half a capful of food colouring to each tub.
Mix well until all the rice in each tub has changed colour.
Rainbow rice ready for play
Set out an old sheet outside and lay out the tubs of rainbow rice and the various play containers and utensils.
Let the kids have fun exploring the coloured rice any way they choose. They might enjoy scooping, pouring, or mixing with hands. Try cutting the top off a plastic bottle to make a funnel.
Try singing some rainbow songs together as you play. You can also make some noisy shakers to play along with by filling some of the rice into empty bottles or tins with lids.
The old sheet catches spilled rice and makes refilling containers and tidying up afterwards much easier.
