Babies learn by exploring the world around them. You don't need to buy expensive toys and can easily make your own fun things for young children. My toddler and I made these together for his little brother and they've both been enjoying playing with them all morning.

Time: 15 minutes
Age: Under 5's
Level: Easy

Materials
Plastic bottles
Pipe cleaners
Mini pom poms
Aluminium foil
Super glue
Strong tape

Method
Collect up small, clear empty bottles and dry thoroughly first.

Fill each bottle with different materials.
My baby's big brother helped to put the pom poms in the first bottle.

Scrunch up aluminium foil and rip some smaller pieces too. They make a good sound and reflect the light.
Bright pipe cleaners are also interesting to look at.
Super glue the lids closed and for extra safety, tape it too.

There are lots of other fillings you can try. Here are a few more ideas.

Colour some water with food dye, add some baby oil for viscosity and add some glitter.
Rainbow rice or go one step further with a Find It Rice bottle.
Small pasta shapes.
Small bells.
Little coloured buttons

The aim is to find a variety of different materials that will be visually stimulating or create different sounds when given a shake.
