Here's how to create your own paper plate barometer or weather chart.

Cloudy today

Time: 20 minutes
Age: Under 5s, 5 to 10s
Level: Easy

Materials
  • Paper plate
  • Pens, crayons or paint
  • Popsicle stick (preferably coloured)
  • Hole punch
  • Butterfly fastener
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Skewer
  • Sticky tape
  • Ruler

  • Method
  • Divide the paper plate into as many sections as you want weather types using a pen and ruler. We went for four sections.

  • Draw a different weather condition in each section, using pens, crayons or paint. We chose 'sunny', 'windy', 'cloudy' and 'thunder storms'. We also wrote the type of weather next to the drawing.

  • Make a hole in one end of the popsicle stick using a regular hole punch. Cut the other end off the popsicle stick to create a dial the length you want it to be.

  • Poke a hole carefully in the middle of the paper plate using a skewer. (An adult should do this step).
  • Fix the popsicle stick dial onto the paper plate using the butterfly fastener through the hole.

  • Tape a curl of ribbon onto the back of the paper plate to make a hanger.

  • Your paper plate barometer is now ready to hang up. Turn the dial to record the weather for the day.

    Sunny day
