Zentangleinspired Hands
This activity has been inspired by zentangles. "Zentangles are drawings composed of patterns (tangles) that can be viewed from all four sides. Zentangles do not contain recognizable objects and there is no “right side up”. The Zentangle method is very focused and mindful."
Time: 2 hours
Age: Over 10's
Level: Medium
Materials
Paper
Pencil
Eraser
Thick and thin "Sharpie" pens or Micron permanent waterproof pens (these come in sets with pens of various thicknesses)
White gel pen
Method
Place your hand down flat on a table with fingers slightly apart and trace round your hand and part of your wrist using a pencil onto a sheet of paper.
Subdivide the drawing of the hand into different sections with as many sections as you wish. Be creative.
Go over your pencil lines with a thin black pen.
Onto another sheet of paper draw as many patterns as you can think of and repeat them. Think of lines - thin, thick, straight, wavy, zigzag, hatched, cross hatched etc. What about spirals, checkerboard, dots dashes etc. Think of patterns in nature as well such as the veins on leaves or scales on a fish. Vary the patterns so that some have white backgrounds and some have black backgrounds. (refer to photo below)
TIP: It is easier to do the black backgrounds by filling in first with a thick sharpie pen then drawing patterns with a white gel pen.
Fill in all of the segments in your hand drawing with different patterns using a range of pens in different thicknesses. Try to vary the patterns and have a balance of black and white in the drawing.
This drawing requires patience but is very relaxing to do and the end result is fantastic and worth all of the effort.
